Maria Teresa Cidade Award 2026

Professor Fernando T. Pinho receives the inaugural Maria Teresa Cidade Award

The Portuguese Society of Rheology (SPR) has awarded the inaugural Maria Teresa Cidade Award to Professor Fernando T. Pinho, of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP), in recognition of his outstanding contributions to rheology and his role in strengthening the international visibility of Portuguese research.

His work has advanced the understanding of turbulent flows of polymer solutions, numerical methods for viscoelastic flows, and microfluidic phenomena, including elastic instabilities and electro-osmotic flows. The award also recognises his dedication to mentoring researchers, building international collaborations and serving the scientific community, including his tenure as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Non-Newtonian Fluid Mechanics.

Named in honour of Maria Teresa Cidade, the award celebrates her scientific achievements, leadership as former SPR President, and commitment to supporting young researchers. It will normally be presented every two years at the Iberian Meeting on Rheology (IBEREO).

The award includes a trophy, a €1,000 cash prize and two years of SPR membership. For this inaugural edition in 2026, the cash prize was generously donated by Dias de Sousa S.A., and the trophy by MTBrandão.
