Our History

The Portuguese Society of Rheology was formally constituted on December 11, 1997 (VAT number 504 030 108). The Installing Committee of the SPR was constituted by Profs. António C. Diogo (Technical University of Lisbon), President, José Covas (University of Minho), Pilar Gonçalves (University of Porto) and the late M. Frias (Lisbon). The Constitution of the Portuguese Society of Rheology was approved at the first electoral meeting held in Porto on May 7, 1998.

According to the Constitution of the SPR, any individual or entity which has applied for membership before May 7, 1998 was considered as founder member of the Society. The list of founder members included 68 individuals and collective entities. The first Council Boards were also elected on May 7, 1998. The General Meeting of May 7, 1998, approved (by unanimity) the application of the Portuguese Society of Rheology for membership of the International Committee of Rheology and of the European Society of Rheology. The first Scientific Meeting of the Portuguese Society of Rheology took place in Lisbon, February 18, 1999. Also in 1999, the SPR cooperated with the Italian Society of Rheology, the Spanish Rheology Group and the Hellenic Society of Rheology in the organisation of the Southern Europe Conference on Rheology, held in Falerna Lido (Calabria, Italy), September 7-11.
